Public Eye

A concept device (coin-operated binoculars enhanced with augmented reality) that opens a shared discussion space between municipal planners and citizens around urban-planning proposals.

Public Eye borrows the metaphor of the coin-operated binoculars found at typical points of interest, but augments the view with AR overlays of proposed buildings, infrastructure, and changes to the surrounding site. The prototype runs on an iOS device and uses modern, easy-to-adopt toolkits (PointCloud and Unity3D), with particular attention to occlusion of real objects and to realistic shadows and reflections, which carry most of the weight in selling the augmented view as believable.
